Fall Conference & Workshop

2022 Fall Conference & Workshops

Our 2022 Fall Conference and Workshops will be held on October 28/29th in Terre Haute, Indiana at the new Terre Haute Convention Center located at 800 Wabash Ave
Terre Haute, IN 47807.

We have once again lined up some fabulous speakers.  Jamie Ellis and Sam Comfort have both confirmed their committment to be our Plenary Speakers.
Last year we had some hands on workshops and will be including those again.

Guest Speakers

Jamie Ellis

Dr. Ellis is the Gahan Endowed Professor of Entomology in the Department of Entomology and Nematology at the University of Florida. At the University of Florida, Dr. Ellis has responsibilities in extension, instruction and research related to honey bees. Regarding his extension work, Dr. Ellis created the UF, South Florida, and Caribbean Bee Colleges, and the UF Master Beekeeper Program. As an instructor, Dr. Ellis supervises Ph.D. and masters students in addition to offering an online course in apiculture. Dr. Ellis and his team conduct research projects in the fields of honey bee husbandry, conservation and ecology, and integrated crop pollination.

Sam Comfort

After winning 6 hives in a poker game, Sam Comfort worked for several years in commercial beekeeping across America.  He started Anarchy Apiaries in 2005 to explore permaculture ideas of low input natural cycles.  He breeds queens from hardy survivors, experiments with splitting techniques, and messes around with hive designs.  So the mission is to 1) make more beehives than there are televisions, and 2) have a good time, all the time (with bees).
Anarchy Apiaries runs around 1,000 hives that split seasonally into around 2,000 mating nucs with no treatments, minimal feeding, and do-it-yourself “comfort hive” boxes in New York and Florida and spots in between.  Through teaching independent, biological beekeeping, he hopes to make it more affordable, approachable, and enjoyable; thus bring the means of production back to the beekeeper.

Workshops

This year we will have two walk-in hands on room.  Each room will have different workshops.  Stations will be setup for the following:

  1. Making Candy board
  2. Assembling Wooden Ware: boxes, frames, etc;
  3. Wax Rendering
  4. Making Hive Products
