Indiana Bee School XXI

Indiana Bee School XXI

2023 Bee School will be held on February 25th, 2023 at Horizon Convention Center in Muncie, Indiana. We have two Plenary speakers and several of Indiana's own speakers.  For more information about our guest speakers, see the right hand side of this page "Who are our Guest Speakers?".

Along with our Plenary Speakers, sessions and discussions will be held for beekeepers with any level of skill, experience or ability. Some of the confirmed speakers and topics are:

  1. Planning on ordering a package this year?  Steve Doty will be teaching a class with important information about installing packages.
  2. Wonder why the drones are important in a hive?  You can listen to Garett Slater explain all about drones.
  3. Lifetime member, Michael Chanley will be presenting on "How to Grow Your Business Using Social Media"
  4. Yes, we have another generation of Shenefields making his debut as a speaker, Derek Shenefield, on "Maximize Your Honey Production"
  5. Want to know how to make your own Pollen feeder or Swarm Traps or 101 other gadgets?  Come listen to Mike Champlin as he explains the many things he has built or makes.
  6. What are the changes for selling honey in Indiana?  Jeff Abshear will be explaining the new law that went into affect July 2022.

Topics on introductory beekeeping tools and techniques, as well as learning opportunities for the more advanced beekeeper will be available.  Along with a great program, we'll have our raffle, live auction and silent auction again.  We also have a newly designed shirt along with our standard designs.  Many vendors will be on-hand with a variety of  displays and supplies, see the list below that will be updated as vendors register.

The cost to attend is the same as it's been for several years now.  Our goal is to make it affordable for our beekeepers to attend.

  • $50 for members
  • $60 for non-members
  • $25 for children 15 or under

Registration is now open.  Click here, if you wish to download and mail in the registration.  Click here, if you wish to use the online system.  There is a transaction fee for using the online system.

This program is for new beekepers with little to no experience in beekeeping.  If you've been in hives, know the three types of bees in a hive or can answer basic questions on beekeeping, this is not the program for you.  This is a special registration.  You will be in the same room all day with the same instructor and you are required to wear a wrist band.

  • $55 for members for beginner class
  • $65 for non-members for beginner class
  • $25 for children 15 or under

For an agenda, click here.

Who are our Guest Speakers?

Jerry Hayes, Bee Culture Magazine and Scott McArt, Cornell University.

Jerry has spent most of his adult life around beekeeping.  He was a Research Technician at the USDA/ARS Baton Rouge Bee Lab, Dadant and Sons Regional Manager, Dadant and Sons New Product Development, and AR Manager, Chief of the Apiary Section for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Monsanto Honey Bee Health Lead and Vice-President of Vita Bee Health North America.  Mr. Hayes was the Classroom Q&A Column of the American Bee Journal for almost 40 years and authored the ‘Classroom’ Book.  Jerry is now Editor of Bee Culture magazine.

Scott McArt, an assistant professor of pollinator health, helps run the Dyce Lab for Honey Bee Studies at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He is particularly interested in scientific research that can inform management decisions by beekeepers, farmers, regulatory agencies, and the public. Research in the McArt lab focuses on the impact of pesticides, pathogens, and management practices on the health of honey bees and wild pollinators.
