My bees started out ok, but the fall and winter was very hard on them. Around Christmas we had a big storm and the wind blew the hive over and a few weeks later a another big snow storm came, the snow melted and the water came up around 2 ft. and got into the bottom of the beehive and the bees drowned.

I am going to get new bees in the spring and we are placing the hives on higher ground. We got around 20lbs. of honey from the bees that drowned, we are going to give it to the new bees. Hopefully we will have better success this summer. I will have 2 hives not just the one.

I have now began winter prep for my bees, winter feeding has began I am using a heavy sugar mix made into patties to feed them for this winter, the hive looks strong.

My grandpa and I will be adding a new bee hive this spring; we are looking forward to this summer so we can sell some honey.

We came back home from Bloomington last Sunday and we seen that the bee hive was blown over by the strong wind we had, my grandpa and I put the bee hive back together, we found the bees inside of the combs still working the hive as far as we can see the bees were ok.

I have learned what bee stings feel like; I was reminded not to be angry round the bees.

I learned that when you are adding new boxes you need to keep the boxes of the bees together and put the new boxes on top, I also learned that you cannot keep the smoker lit with paper only.

I have seen the drone bees forced out of the bee hive, and seen the honey cells being filled and capped off, and the pollen is starting to fill up.

The bees are now at around 90 thousand bees in the hive.

Now looking forward to some honey this fall.

It was fun building my 1st hive. I got to keep the swarm box that my bees came in.

I had a few bees drown in the sugar water within the first couple of days.

I got some extra comb because my bees were buildign it from scratch on the bottom of some of my frames.

I found the queen on the 8th day after I got my bees. It is very interesting watching the bees flying out and bringing back the pollen.

I am learning new things from my mentor Mr. Thomas about different aspects of the bees. I look forward to learniong more and am glad I am learning how to take care of my bees.
